Examples of "lost" relatives and "unusual" family circumstances - many of which are far from unusual.

Second (or subsequent) marriages  
Stepchildren  
Cohabitation (hetero or homo sexual)  
Formally adopted children  
Adoptive parents  
Informal adoptions  
Illegitimacy (especially in the relationship of father and child)  
Children with a father who is not the person they (or possibly also their mother) believe it to be  
Children born through surrogacy  
Children born as a result of artificial insemination by donor (AID)  
Incestuous relationships and children born from them  
Grandchildren brought up as children without knowledge of true parents  
Aunts and uncles bringing up children as their own without knowledge of true parents  
Children estranged from parents  
Siblings who are knowingly estranged  
Children with siblings whom they know nothing about - possibly born to mother out of wedlock and given up at birth  
People born in the old communist bloc countries with wives and/or children still there but with whom they have lost contact often from the Second World War.  They may not be sure if they have been formally divorced.  This is likely to be repeated in the future with the arrival of asylum seekers  
People born in the old communist bloc countries with a "history" (possibly arising in the Second World War) who because of bad memories or a fear for their safety wish to forget the past. This is likely to be repeated in the future with the arrival of asylum seekers from oppressive regimes or war torn countries.
